Postdoctoral level position available

We seek a postdoctoral-level biologist with experience in automated image analysis/recognition and or advanced flow cytometry to work on the implementation and optimisation of imaging flow cytometry for detection of harmful algae and monitoring phytoplankton community dynamics over a wide spatial scale using robotic sampling on ships-of-opportunity. The project is funded by the program FONDEF IT FAN for 24 months and involves an interdisciplinary team of physical and biological oceanographers and marine engineers, as well as collaboration with stakeholders.

Optimise methods for collecting and preserving phytoplankton samples for imaging flow cytometry analysis.

Optimise protocols for sample processing and automated image analysis, image and pattern recognition, determining what the limits of discrimination and detection are for target species.

Compare the ability of imaging flow cytometry to traditional phytoplankton methodologies for detecting and distinguish known harmful algal species.

We seek a researcher who has advanced experience in automated image analysis and recognition, and preferably microscopy. Some experience in programming (e.g., writing macros for image analysis routines, or similar experience) can be highly valuable.

More than any specific skill set, we look for candidates who are self-driven, detail-oriented, display leadership in problem-solving, ready to critically diagnose instrument performance and data analysis methods, and motivated to work in truly interdisciplinary teams involving biologists, oceanographers, and engineers.

We note that candidates who bring highly relevant experience from non-marine fields (e.g., cell biology) are encouraged to apply, as well as biologists with experience in marine or aquatic sciences.

PhD received no earlier than January 2012.
Must be ready to start between no later than the end of March 2018.
Must have residency in Chile by the time contract begins, but Chilean nationality is not required.
Publication level should be commensurate with time since completing PhD, and include at least one first-author publication in an internationally indexed (ISI/WOS) journal.

Available for international travel (e.g., to the USA and/or Europe) for two weeks or more for intensive training in both traditional phytoplankton taxonomy and the use of imaging flow cytometry.
