Líneas de Investigación

1. Sustratos anatómicos y  mecanismos que determinan la recaída a la búsqueda compulsiva de drogas adictivas inducida por estrés.

Los estímulos estresantes liberan hormona o factor liberador de corticotrofina (CRH) en el área del tegmento ventral (VTA), tanto en ratas naïve como en ratas expuestas repetidamente a cocaína. Sin embargo, CRH induce la liberación de glutamato solo en el VTA de las ratas previamente expuestas a cocaína. En el laboratorio estamos estudiando: a) ¿Cuál(es) son los mecanismos que determinan la sensibilización del glutamato a CRH?  B) ¿En que núcleo cerebral se originan los terminales glutamatérgicos del VTA que se sensibilizan a CRH por la exposición a cocaína? 

2. Papel del Septum lateral en la conducta adictiva.

El Septum lateral es un núcleo del sistema límbico que juega un papel clave en la regulación del estado de ánimo y la motivación. En el laboratorio estudiamos los cambios que  inducen las drogas adictivas en la función del Septum lateral y su papel en el proceso adictivo.

3. Papel de la proteína quinasa PKMzeta en el proceso adictivo

PKMzeta es una proteína quinasa constitutivamente activa que se ha mostrado ser necesaria y suficiente para mantener la potenciación de larga duración (LTP), sustrato fisiológico de memoria. En el laboratorio estudiamos si PKMzeta juega un papel en los cambios perdurables que llevan a la adicción.

4. Regulación de la expresión génica del neuropéptido Urocortina1 y su papel en el proceso adictivo y en la respuesta a estrés

Urocortina 1 es un neuropéptido que tiene alta afinidad por los dos receptores a CRH, incluso mayor que CRH. La evidencia indica que Urocortina 1 comparte funciones con CRH, pero también tiene acciones propias. En el laboratorio hemos mostrado que el gen de Urocortina 1 presenta características de un gen altamente regulado. Hemos detectado su procesamiento alternativo por retención de intrón y la existencia de un transcrito de Urocortina 1 antisentido. Nos interesa conocer más sobre la regulación génica de urocortina 1 y sobre su papel en el proceso adictivo.

5. Neuropéptidos, estrés y adicción

Además de CRH y Urocortina 1, otros neuropéptidos como orexina y el péptido CART (cocaine and amphetamine related transcript) están relacionados al proceso adictivo y a estrés. En el laboratorio, mediante enfoques moleculares, celulares y neuroquímicos  estudiamos el papel de estos neuropéptidos en el proceso adictivo y en estrés.
