Líneas de Investigación

Los cuerpos carotídeos (CC) son los quimiorreceptores más importantes que sensan los niveles arteriales de PO2, PCO2 and pH. La hipoxia, hipercapnia y la acidosis aumentan la frecuencia de descarga de potenciales de acción en el nervio carotideo e inician los ajustes ventilatorios y cardiovasculares. Los CB contribuyen a la regulación de los gases respiratorios y tienen un papel predominante en el desarrollo de las respuestas ventilatorias en el recién nacido. Los CBs son importantes en la aclimatización y adaptación a la hipoxia de altura y en la reiniciación de la ventilación detenida en la apnea obstructiva del sueño. Los CBs han sido implicados en el desarrollo de la hipertensión y la muerte súbita del recién nacido. Existe acuerdo que la transducción del O2 ocurre en las células glómicas y que esta acoplada a la secreción -Ca2 -dependiente de al menos un transmisor, que aumenta la descarga en los terminales sensoriales. Las células glómicas contienen acetilcolina, catecolaminas, nucleótidos de adenosina y péptidos que podrían actuar como transmisores y/o moduladores quimiosensoriales. Pero, en el CB están presentes otras moléculas como el óxido nítrico que también participa en la quimiorrecepción. Existe un grado alto de co-localización de las enzimas que sintetizan) con péptidos en las células glómicas. Por lo tanto, es posible que las células glómicas en respuesta a los estímulos co-liberen más de un tipo de moléculas. Nosotros estamos interesados en determinar si acetilcolina y ATP son los transmisores excitatorios y determinar si DA y NO tienen un rol inhibitorio en el proceso quimiosensorial. Los resultados de estas investigaciones tienen implicaciones para entender no solo la fisiología quimiosensorial sino que son básicos para entender y prevenir el desarrollo de patologías cardiovasculares y respuestas ventilatorias anormales asociadas a los CBs.
