Líneas de Investigación


Las plantas son afectadas por numerosos patógenos siendo las enfermedades causadas por virus unas de las más frecuentes y de difícil control. La mayor parte de los virus que infectan plantas son de tipo RNA de hebra sencilla, y se transmiten mediante vectores biológicos o  de manera mecánica. Una vez dentro de la célula vegetal los virus se  replican en el sitio de infección y se  desplazan por movimiento célula a célula a través de los plasmodesmos hasta llegar al sistema vascular, por el que se distribuyen a toda la planta. Estamos interesados en caracterizar el desplazamiento viral y los efectos que estas infecciones causan en las plantas. Para estos estudios utilizamos la planta modelo de Arabidopsis thaliana y la vid,Vitis vinifera, la especie frutal de mayor importancia en Chile. Mediante experimentos de genómica funcional hemos identificado numerosos genes afectados por la infección, y estamos actualmente identificando y caracterizando genes claves en la respuesta de la planta. Nuestros resultados muestran que genes relacionados con el proceso de senescencia se inducen en tejidos verdes de las plantas infectadas. En los frutos de la vid el proceso de maduración también se ve afectado por la infección viral (mayor acidez, menor contenido de sólidos solubles, menor concentración de antocianos) lo que se correlaciona con una disminución en los transcritos de genes de la vía fenilpropanoide y de transportadores de azúcares, entre otros. Una de las aplicaciones de nuestra investigación es la generación de plantas de vides resistentes a enfermedades virales, la que hemos abordado mediante la estrategia de inducción de silenciamiento viral en portainjertos de vid, con muy buenos resultados en condiciones de laboratorio.

Estamos también trabajando en el estudio del estrés abiótico causado por salinidad, Boro y Aluminio en plantas utilizando el modelo de Arabidopsis y también plantas de interés agrícola como los cítricos y el arándano. Hemos identificado genes inducidos por el exceso de B y Al, y estamos trabajando en la generación de portainjertos de cítricos tolerantes a salinidad mediante modificación genética.  La sobre-expresión de genes y la complementación  en mutantes de la planta modeloArabidopsis thaliana son herramientas que se utilizan para dilucidar la función de genes de plantas de interés.
