Líneas de Investigación

Con financiamiento de tipo FONDOS BASALES (CONICYT) y FONDAP (CASEB), apoyamos la primera red basada en ciencia que provee apoyo e infraestructura a investigación de largo plazo en ecosistemas terrestres Chilenos. Estudios a largo plazo efectuados en la Estación Biológica Senda Darwin (SDBS) incluyen el monitoreo (10 años) de los ensambles de polinizadores de árboles, el rol de los bosques primarios en apoyo a la biodiversidad de dosel, y la evaluación del reclutamiento de árboles en matorrales templados. Los resultados entregan luces sobre la función de los ecosistemas de los paisajes rurales y la restauración de los bosques templados. En el sitio experimental del Bosque de Fray Jorge hemos reportado la relación de largo plazo entre la productividad y la diversidad de plantas anuales, modulada por los efectos de la variación de las precipitaciones de ENSO (durante más de 20 años), y el efecto de la radiación UV-B sobre la descomposición de la hojarasca durante los períodos sin lluvia. Hemos simulado las tendencias climáticas de latitudes templadas en SDBS, al excluir el 30% de las precipitaciones de verano (escurrimiento) de los bosques de hoja perenne secundarios (80-90 años de edad). El monitoreo de todos los árboles en dos parcelas experimentales y dos controles (20x20 m) fue realizado a través de su crecimiento radial medido periódicamente con dendrómetros digitales y manuales. Las variables estudiadas en estas parcelas son escurrimiento, cubierta de helechos, el crecimiento de la raíz, y la respiración del suelo (flujo de salida de CO2).
Este estudio mejorará nuestra comprensión de la respuesta de los bosques al cambio climático.
