Líneas de Investigación

El principal interés de nuestro grupo es comprender los mecanismos moleculares que posibilitan la adaptación de las cianobacterias a ambientes con baja disponibilidad de agua. La zona hiperárida del desierto de Atacama representa un ambiente particularmente apropiado para este estudio, puesto que se trata del desierto más antiguo y seco del mundo. Con agua disponible principalmente como niebla o rocío, este desierto impone un límite a los procesos de fotosíntesis y producción primaria. De ahí que la vida microbiana, descubierta solo recientemente en el Atacama, es muy escasa. En el microbioma de este ecosistema se encuentran cianobacterias hipolíticas que se desarrollan bajo rocas de cuarzo o bajo los primeros milímetros de la superficie de yesos y halitas. Aparte de una identificación genotípica preliminar basada en rRNA 16S, es muy poco lo que se conoce sobre estos microorganismos. Uno de los componentes principales de esta microflora de cianobacterias es Chroococcidiopsis, un género muy típico de ambientes desérticos extremos en el mundo. Chroococcidiopsisresiste prolongadas desecaciones, así como también a las radiaciones. Hemos concentrado nuestra atención en esta cianobacteria porque pensamos que dado este comportamiento debe disponer de varios mecanismos adaptativos. Estos presumiblemente deben incluir la síntesis de polisacáridos extracelulares, la producción de solutos compatibles (sacarosa, trehalosa, etc), así como también la producción de dehidrinas o hidrofilinas, proteínas que participan en respuestas al estrés hídrico en todos los dominios de la vida. Para cumplir nuestro objetivo, estamos empleando una cepa de Chroococcidiopsisque aislamos de microfilms hipolíticos que colectamos de cuarzos del desierto de Atacama y que hemos logrado cultivar exitosamente en el laboratorio.

Nuestros estudios también se proyectan al ámbito de la astrobiología, puesto que el desierto es un reconocido modelo del planeta Marte.
