Líneas de Investigación

La hipertensión arterial afecta al 20% de la población y sus complicaciones constituyen la primera causa de muerte en los adultos. El riñón tiene un papel protagónicoen la regulación de la presión arterial mediante la producciónde hormonas vasoactivas que participan en el control del tono vascular y en la excreción de sal y agua.

Mi línea de investigación es el estudio de la regulación de estas hormonas renales y su contribución a la fisiología renal y a patologías como hipertensión arterial, enfermedades renales y diabetes, en su evolución naturaly bajo tratamiento farmacológico.

Con una aproximación morfofuncional,nuestros estudios tienen un espectro amplio que va desde la ultraestructura (microscopía electrónica) hasta animales intactos; desde animales de laboratorio a estudios en humanos adultos y durante el desarrollo; desde la expresión de genes hasta la función y regulación de enzimas, hormonas y receptores.

Los estudios actuales están orientados a las siguientes áreas:

1. El estudio de microambientes anatómicos renales donde actúan los sistemas Calicreina, Renina y sus mediadores, y su participación en la regulación de la hemodinámica glomerular y la excreción de agua y sal

2. Desarrollo y maduración postnatal del riñon, de las estructuras productoras de agentes vasoactivos, de sus sitios de acción, receptores y mediadores.

3. Localización y regulaciónde Ciclooxigenasa-2 renal, en condiciones fisiológicas, durante el desarrollo y en patologías. Caracterización ultraestructural de sus células de origen.

4. Mecanismos de progresión de daño renal: inducción local de la enzima de conversión de angiotensina 1, disminución de calicreina, expresión de péptidos que atraen y activan macrófagos y linfocitos, fibrosis túbulo-intersticial

5. Hipertensión arterial sensible a la sal como consecuencia de la alteración de mecanismos fisiológicos mediados por hormonas vasoactivos y de lesiones túbulo-intersticiales.

En estos estudios participan estudiantes de medicina, de biología, bioquímica y estudiantes graduadosde programa de doctorado.

Parte de estos estudios producto de colaboración con investigadores de otros centros nacionales, e internacionales (Estados Unidos, Francia, Alemania y Australia).

El laboratorio recibe financiamiento de Fondecyt y del Instituto Nacional de Salud (USA).
