CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR TWO ACADEMIC POSITIONS FOR ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS IN MATHEMATICAL BIOLOGY OR COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY

The Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCB) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile invites interested candidates to apply for two tenure-track positions at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. One of these positions will have a joint appointment with the Institute of Mathematics and Computational Engineering (IMC) being its primary affiliation. The applicants must demonstrate successful, independent and interdisciplinary research in Mathematical Biology, Computational Biology or related areas using mathematical tools and quantitative biology for modeling of biological systems and processes, analysis of dynamic systems, development of systems biology or the use of artificial intelligence in biology, among other areas. In addition, they will be expected to demonstrate their ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students in these areas, including the training of new scientists. Formal training in mathematics or computation is mandatory.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED TO THE ACADEMIC POSITIONS:

1. To lead independent and internationally recognized research in the areas of this call.
2. To establish collaborations with researchers from other areas of the FCB and IMC, or other academic units within the University aiming to develop interdisciplinary research.
3. To teach undergraduate and graduate students through leading lectures or laboratory courses, collaborating in course design, and acting as a student advisor in research courses and theses. Undergraduate teaching will be focused on the initial levels of training for undergraduate students from Biochemistry, Biology, Marine Biology, and undergraduates from other programs at the University (i.e., health sciences, education, college, among others). The joint appointment should be able to teach undergraduate and graduate students at the IMC. Enrolling in the teaching certificate from the Centro de Desarrollo Docente is mandatory for all new Faculty. 
4. To train future scientists by advising or mentoring undergraduate or graduate research students.
5. To obtain external research funding.
6. To participate in academic and administrative activities within the University.
7. To develop outreach activities with an impact on society and the general public.

1. Hold a PhD degree in the areas indicated above and postdoctoral experience is highly recommended. 

• Ability to carry out independent research and to obtain funding for research.

• Demonstrate capacity to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels.

• For those applying to the Associate Professor level teaching experience or holding a teaching certificate need to be demonstrated.

LLAMADO A CONCURSO PARA PROVEER DOS CARGOS DE PROFESOR(A) ASISTENTE O ASOCIADO(A) EN CATEGORÍA ORDINARIA EN BIOLOGÍA MATEMATICA O BIOLOGÍA COMPUTACIONAL

La Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas (FCCBB) llama a concurso para dos cargos de profesor(a) Asistente o Asociado(a) de jornada completa en la Planta Ordinaria, uno de los cuales tendrá nombramiento compartido con el Instituto de Ingeniería Matemática y Computacional (IMC), siendo su afiliación primaria en dicho Instituto. Las personas seleccionadas deberán demostrar capacidad para desarrollar una línea de investigación independiente e interdisciplinaria en biología matemática, biología computacional, o áreas afines, y deberán utilizar herramientas matemáticas y biología cuantitativa para el modelamiento de sistemas y procesos biológicos, el análisis de sistemas dinámicos, el desarrollo de la biología de sistemas, o el uso de inteligencia artificial en biología, entre otras. Además, deberán enseñar biología matemática y/o biología computacional, a nivel de pregrado y postgrado, y formar investigadores. Los candidatos(as) deberá contar con una formación de base en matemáticas o computación.

RESPONSABILIDADES ASOCIADAS A LOS CARGOS

1. Realizar investigación independiente, y de impacto internacional en las áreas de este llamado.
2. Generar interacciones y vinculaciones con investigadoras e investigadores de otras áreas, con énfasis en la colaboración entre la FCCBB y el IMC, y también con otras unidades académicas dentro de la universidad, para poder desarrollar un trabajo de investigación de carácter colaborativo e interdisciplinario.
3. Realizar docencia a nivel de pregrado y postgrado, dictando clases teóricas y/o prácticas, colaborando en el diseño de cursos, y sirviendo de tutor(a) en unidades de investigación, memorias de pregrado y tesis de postgrado. La docencia de pregrado estará enfocada a cursos de nivel inicial/básico, orientada a estudiantes de las carreras propias de la FCCBB (Bioquímica, Biología y Biología Marina), y a otras carreras de la Universidad (por ej. aquellas en las áreas de la salud, pedagogía, college, ingeniería, matemática, etc.). El profesor compartido con el IMC deberá además tener la capacidad de enseñar y participar en la docencia de pregrado y postgrado de cursos del IMC. De ser incorporados(as) como académicos(as), los/as postulantes seleccionados/as deberán cursar el Diplomado en Docencia Universitaria dictado por el Centro de Desarrollo Docente UC, a menos que demuestren una formación equivalente.
4. Formar profesionales y científicos(as) mediante la dirección y supervisión de memorias de pregrado y tesis de magíster y doctorado.
5. Obtener fondos externos que permitan financiar su investigación.
6. Participar en actividades académicas y administrativas al interior de la universidad.
7. Realizar actividades de extensión y de vinculación con el medio.

REQUISITOS PARA POSTULAR

• Grado de doctor(a) en las áreas relacionadas con este llamado a concurso. Tener  experiencia postdoctoral es altamente recomendable tener.
• Demostrar capacidad para desarrollar y liderar investigación independiente y obtener fondos de investigación extramurales.
• Idealmente contar con experiencia en docencia universitaria.
• Quienes aspiran a ingresar en la categoría de profesor(a) Asociado(a), deberán acreditar la realización de un diplomado en docencia universitaria o experiencia equivalente.

CRITERIOS DE SELECCIÓN

• Trayectoria académica, liderazgo y calidad de la producción científica.
• Dominio del área de investigación que propone desarrollar y capacidad para generar investigación interdisciplinaria entre  la FCCBB y el IMC.
• Referencias académicas.
• Potencial de integración a las actividades académicas de ambas unidades y de generar instancias de trabajo interdisciplinario,
• Experiencia en docencia universitaria.
• En igualdad de antecedentes se dará prioridad a mujeres y minorías étnicas.
