Líneas de Investigación

a. Transferencia lateral de genes en Salmonella y su rol en virulencia

La transferencia lateral de genes es un proceso que permite la transmisión de material genético desde una bacteria a otra. Nuestra investigación se enfoca en la identificación de elementos genéticos adquiridos por transferencia lateral de genes enSalmonella enterica, un género de bacterias patógenas de mamíferos. Mediante análisis del genoma completo de esta bacteria hemos identificado islas de patogenicidad inestables y profagos, que pueden ser transferidos a bacterias que no poseen estos elementos. Actualmente estamos evaluando el rol de estos elementos genéticos en la virulencia de Salmonella y en su interacción con células del sistema inmune del hospedero.

b. Rol de la infección causada por Salmonella en el inicio de la enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal

La enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal es una enfermedad crónica del intestino, caracterizada por un desorden inmunológico persistente que promueve inflamación. Aunque se han descrito condiciones genéticas asociadas a esta enfermedad, aún no se encuentran identificados los factores que gatillan su inicio. En nuestro laboratorio nos encontramos evaluando si la infección causada por Salmonella enterica, un género de bacterias patógenas de mamíferos, resulta en una modificación permanente en el patrón de células inmunes asociadas a la mucosa intestinal, que podría gatillar el inicio de esta enfermedad en individuos susceptibles.

c. Efecto de las hormonas tiroideas durante la gestación en la susceptibilidad a enfermedades infecciosas bacterianas.

Las hormonas tiroideas T3 y T4 son fundamentales durante la gestación para el normal desarrollo del sistema nervioso central, pulmón y sistema inmune, por lo que una deficiencia de estas hormonas durante la gestación resulta en secuelas en la progenie, que podrían aumentar su susceptibilidad a enfermedades infecciosas. En nuestro laboratorio estamos evaluando si una deficiencia de hormonas tiroideas durante la gestación afecta la susceptibilidad de la progenie a sufrir una infección por la bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae, uno de los principales causantes de neumonía y meningitis bacteriana en niños menores de 5 años.
