Líneas de Investigación

El fitoplancton marino es el responsable de cerca de la mitad de la fijación de carbono en el mundo.  Mi investigación se focaliza en el fitoplancton eucarionte, el cual está formado por organismos unicelulares fotosintéticos que cumplen roles importantes en los ecosistemas marinos y en los ciclos biogeoquímicos del carbono y silicato.  Me interesan específicamente los ciclos de vida, la genómica y evolución del fitoplancton. Actualmente los océanos están cambiando rápidamente por efecto de actividades humanas (eutroficación, introducción de especies en nuevos ecosistemas, cambios climáticos, y acidificación de los oceános).  Para predecir cómo los servicios ecosistémicos de los oceános serán afectados necesitamos entender mejor el funcionamiento y capacidad de adaptación del fitoplancton.

Actualmente, estoy investigando 1) cambios transcriptómicos y fisiológicos en los ciclos de vida de diatomeas y coccolitofóridos, 2) efectos de estrés fisiológico sobre diferentes fases del ciclo de vida del coccolitofórido Emiliania huxleyi, 3) consecuencias ecológicas y evolutivas de los cambios genómicos en diatomeas y coccolitofóridos, y 4) el uso avanzado de citometría de flujo para caracterizar el fitoplancton.
