The Faculty of Biological Sciences (FBS) and the Faculty of Medicine (FMED) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile invite interested candidates to apply for a tenure-track position and joint appointment at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor for research in Down Syndrome. The focus is on the production of new knowledge regarding Down Syndrome and the understanding of this condition and potential treatment and prevention strategies for associated health conditions, specifically developing research in areas such as cell biology, physiology, neurobiology, molecular genetics, immunology, among others. Recognizing that Down syndrome is a complex condition, an approach that may include aspects of basic and applied clinical research, with an interdisciplinary focus, is expected. The candidate must also actively participate in the development of research at the UC Down Syndrome Center, collaborate with professionals from different disciplines, and possess the skills to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as to train researchers. The position will have a joint affiliation with FBS (primary affiliation) and FMED.

Responsibilities associated to the academic positions

  • To lead independent and internationally recognized research in Down Syndrome in the areas indicated.
  • To establish collaborations with researchers from other areas of the FBS and the FMED or other academic units within the University to develop interdisciplinary research and promote interdisciplinary research at the UC Down Syndrome Center.
  • To teach undergraduate and graduate students through leading lectures or laboratory courses, collaborating in course design, and acting as a student advisor in research courses and theses. Undergraduate teaching will be focused on the initial levels of training for undergraduate students at the FBS (Biochemistry, Biology, Marine Biology), the FMED (medicine, nurse, health sciences) and undergraduates from other programs at the University. Enrolling in the teaching certificate from the Centro de Desarrollo Docente is mandatory for all new Faculty.
  • Social responsibility in research involving vulnerable individuals, such as those with Down syndrome, whose main challenges is intellectual disability and associated health problems.
  • To train future scientists by advising or mentoring undergraduate or graduate research students.
  • To obtain external research funding.
  • To participate in academic and administrative activities within the University.
  • To develop outreach activities with an impact on society and the general public.

Application requirements

  • Hold a PhD degree and postdoctoral experience in any of the areas indicated above. Demonstrate solid knowledge of the genetics, biology, physiology, immunology, and/or neurodevelopment related to Down syndrome and be up-to-date on current lines of related research.
  • Ability to carry out independent research and to obtain funding for research in Down Syndrome or related areas.
  • Demonstrate capacity to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • For those applying to the Associate Professor level, teaching experience or holding a teaching certificate need to be demonstrated.

Selection criteria

  • Trajectory, leadership, and quality of scientific contributions.
  • Mastery of the research area that it proposes to develop in the FBS and FMED through its UC Down Syndrome Center
  • Potential for academic progress and integration within the FBS and FMED.
  • Teaching experience
  • Recommendation letters.
  • All other things being equal, priority will be given to women and ethnic minorities.
