CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO FILL A POSITION OF ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE AREA OF INTEGRATIVE BIOLOGY IN MARINE ENVIRONMENTS

The Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCB) invites applications for a full‑time Assistant or Associate Professor position. The selected candidate must demonstrate the ability to develop an independent and productive research program focused on fundamental and/or applied research on marine organisms or ecosystems. Candidates are expected to have a research activity that places them at the frontier of knowledge in their respective field. We are especially seeking researchers who can address fundamental and/or applied questions in marine biology in innovative and interdisciplinary ways. The successful candidate is expected to carry out part of their teaching and research activities at the Coastal Marine Research Station (Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas, ECIM) in Las Cruces (110 km from Santiago). Candidates must also be qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and to train young researchers.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE POSITION

  1. Conduct independent, high‑quality research—fundamental and/or applied—on marine organisms or ecosystems. Part of the research activity must be carried out at ECIM.
  2. Establish interactions and collaborations with researchers from other areas, both within FCB and with other academic units inside or outside the university, to strengthen interdisciplinary research.
  3. Teach at undergraduate and graduate levels by delivering theoretical and/or practical classes and collaborate in the design and innovation of courses for FCB degree programs (Biochemistry, Biology, and Marine Biology) and other biology‑related programs at the University. If appointed, the candidate must complete the 100‑hour University Teaching Program offered by the UC Center for Teaching Development.
  4. Train professionals and scientists by supervising undergraduate theses and doctoral dissertations.
  5. Obtain competitive external funding to support their research.
  6. Participate in academic and administrative activities within the university.
  7. Carry out outreach and community engagement activities.

REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY

  1. PhD degree and postdoctoral experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop and lead independent research and to secure extramural research funding.

  • Academic record, leadership, and quality of scientific output.
  • Relevance and potential impact of the research proposed for FCCBB and ECIM.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Academic references.
